Blog No Longer Needed?
Now that the law school has an official website at http://www.loynolaw.org and is encouraging students to sign up on a listserv, I would imagine that the utility of this blog will diminish rapidly.
Unless I hear otherwise from faculty, administration, or students, I will phase this blog out by the middle of next week. I will not remove it entirely, but will post nothing new.
If the community feels that it has continued usefulness, however, I’ll be happy to continue it for a while. Please let me know.

Offer of Help and a Horse
University Of California Davis has taken 13 or so Tulane/Loyola law
students displaced by Katrina. I am looking to find some who are moving
here to Davis. I’m hoping to provide some study materials, backpack,
extra clothes, some extras etc. I can pick you guys up at the airport. I
drive to campus every day and can offer some rides. I own a dressage
horse you can borrow if you miss yours. Ideally I’d find a girl who is
about my same size (12-14 pant, 10- 10 1/2 shoe) who may call me up and
say “Hey Leslie, I need a date dress, and a ride”.

Pro bono services in Lafayette?
Hey everyone. Sonia Gupta here. I have been volunteering at the cajundome in Lafayette and it’s been an amazing experience. People seem to be in fairly good spirits. However, several victims have asked me (after I tell them I’m a law student) if there are any pro bono services being offered in Lafayette and the surrounding area. I have made some calls and searched online but haven’t found anything helpful. Does anyone have any info I could relay to these people? A lot of them are concerned about their ongoing litigation, workman’s comp issues, etc. If anyone reading the blog has any info, please email me: redsonia7@gmail.com. LOYOLA LAW ROCKS!!!!

Civil Law Casebook
Dear Civil Law Classmates,
Yesterday I called Claitior’s Publishing Division: Baton Rouge, who publishes our Civil Law Property Book for oneLs, to see if they would replace out book for free or a lower price. The Company told me they wish they could, but they would not replace out book for free or for a lower price. So, I called and e-mailed some students from Southern University of Law and LSU. Several Southern University Law students responded, and they are willing to donate their book to us:
So, if you are missing your Civil Law Property Coursebook, and you do not mind a used one, please let me know by e-mailing me at cjsweet04@yahoo.com/ Subject Line: Civil Law Property Book Replacement, Name, number, and e-mail address. I need to let the Southern University student coordinator know the number by Sunday afternoon. I will ask for five extras just in case.
Title: Civil Law Property Coursebook (8th Edition) 2003
Published by: Claitor’s Publishing Division in Baton Rouge- phone#800-274-1403 or 225-344-0476
ISBN:9970860623
To Faculty,
If Claitor’s Publishing will replace our book for free, could you please let me know how to obtain it. If not, classmates just let me know, and I will bring them down with me when I move to Houston. cjsweet04@yahoo.com

Courts? Bar Exam?
Does anyone know what’s being done with the local courts, specifically CDC, 24th, and St. Bernard? I know 5th Circuit went to Houston, but that’s all I’ve seen. As we’ve seen, these situations sometimes bring out the worst in people, and I’ve already got family members with custody issues, there’s a concern as to the rights each parent has, and whether the non-domiciliary (can never spell that) can keep the domiciliary parent from disrupting the little stability to the child’s life thats managed to be establish.
I also have my own (or rather my office’s) clients and cases that were pending, I still haven’t found my boss (Steven Psarellis). I realize everything’s on hold, but especially with the custody issues. Our office was in Canal Place, and the last I heard about that was Saks 5th Ave. had a fire….
Along with those issues, there’s a concern as to what happened with the July Bar exams. I know a few people that took it, and like everything else, rumors abound on the different blogs…
Any info available would be greatly appreciated.

Some more questions
First things first: much thanks to Eric for creating and monitering this blog and to everyone involved in arranging for Loyola’s fall semester to continue at the University of Houston and for graduation to remain on track.
I know the answers to these questions will likely be coming in the near future, but, regardless, I wanted to post some specific questions:
1) When will registration for Loyola classes at U of H begin? Will registration take place over the Internet or over the phone?
2) Will students be allowed to take a full course load? (i.e. around 14 hours?)
3) Will students be receiving actual grades for this semester or will we be taking these classes on a pass/fail basis?
4) Will students be responsible for contacting the various publishers to receive free books or will the professors for each class be making a “mass” order?
Thanks in advance for answers to these questions, and I look forward to seeing everyone in Houston!!!

in Louisiana. For students interested in learning
more, please contact Associate Director Ramona

1LE Question
I’m currently living in San Antonio and am considering taking classes in
Houston; however, I have a question – is it possible to wait until spring
and take the second semester 1LE courses WITHOUT having taken the first
semester courses? If not, is there a possibility of the first semester
courses being taught in the spring?

3L offerings at UH?
I am just curious what classes are going to be offerred for upperclassman at UH. I am a 3L and already registered at LSU law, but I would rather be in classes that are going to help me prepare for the bar. At LSU, there were very few of those classes available. Also, I know at LSU we are being graded on a pass/fail basis. Will we be graded the same way at UH? What professors are teaching? Thanks.

Prof. Quigley’s Tale
I read your blog
http://www.isthatlegal.org/loyno/2005/09/professor_bill_quigley.html,
not because I know Prof. Quigley or have any connection with Loyola,
but I heard his Democracy Now reports from Memorial Hospital and was
very concerned about his safety, as was your last blogger, Ms. Friedman.
I continued to research and found this website publication, undated,
that has an interview with Professor Quigley after he left the hospital
and was “decompressing” near Lafayette, staying with his wife’s family.
Warning: The article, which appears to have been posted on Sept. 6 or
7, is a very grim story. Read for yourself:

I am so glad Bill Quigley survived and could share with us his
harrowing tale.

Anonymous Complaints
I have been receiving a small flow of anonymous complaints (both via email, and in comments people are attempting to post to the blog) about tuition.
I have also received a number of non-anonymous posts/comments with those complaints.
I have posted the non-anonymous ones on this site, and have screened out the anonymous ones.
I am the owner of this blog, and reserve the right to use it in ways that I feel will be helpful to the law school community as you try to get back on your feet. I don’t think that anonymous complaints are helpful, so I won’t post them.
If somebody would like to create their own blog for anonymous complaints about how the school is responding to the Katrina disaster, that is their right.

From Vice Dean Chandler at UH about UH Program
I know the Loyola folks are busy dealing with many issues, so let me try to help here. The plan is to hold classes at the main University of Houston campus (the address is 4800 Calhoun, Houston TX 77004). I can’t say that 100% of the classes will be held here, but the current plan is to hold the vast, vast majority of them here. If you run that address through Mapquest or similar web mapping software, you should get a good idea of the location. Any Houston realtor should be able to help you with this information.
Also, you can take a virtual tour of the facility at http://www.law.uh.edu/site/

Important Question about UH Class Locations
Dear Loyola Law Faculty,
Attention: Dean Bromberger
Presently, I am a oneL student who is currently looking for housing in the Houston area for at least six students. We have found a realtor, also a lawyer, who is trying to accomodate our needs and strict budget. In an effort to help, she needs to know which campus our classes will be held mainly. Therefore, will our classes be held all over the University of Houston Area, downtown, or another location? Even if the location is tentative, any information would be useful. Please respond ASAP.
Also, thank you faculty and staff for all your efforts. In this difficult time, it is sometimes hard to see the positive side and blessings of having this opportunity to start anew in Houston. Even so, I appreciate your efforts and hope to hear a response from anyone(staff, faculty, or student) regarding this relocation concern.
My e-mail address is cjsweet04@yahoo.com, Claire H. McDaniel.

Re: 2006 admissions
First and foremost, I would like to let everyone know that you are in our hearts and prayers. I am happy that we have all united as a nation to aide one another in this devastating crisis.
My comment/question is: I understand that LSAC.org is accepting applications for Tulane and Loyola as well. I am planning to attend Loyola next fall, hopefully. With the school needing to rebuild I am wondering how strict admissions requirements will be? Any thoughts or comments are welcomed.
You all are in our thoughts and prayers. Hang in there!! We’re with you!!!

A 1L’s Plans
Although not a 100% concrete, it’s looking more and more like Houston may not be an option. My husband still has a job (thank goodness), and they want him to start back on 9/15. We do not know if we will be able to live in our previous apt. or if we need to find a new one. And, my daughter’s daycare will not be online again for several more weeks. So, separating from my family is not very feasible at this time. But, I feel fairly confident that if given the next few months, I will be able to re-settle my daughter in a daycare, and either salvage our current residence or locate a new one in the N.O. area for my family, in time to restart classes at Loyola New Orleans for the spring semester if that is an option.
I am committed to returning to Loyola Law, but I cannot make my family’s situation worse (financially and emotionally) at this point in time by abandoning them in N.O. to start classes in Houston. The best solution for my family is to get back on our feet, and then take another run at law school in the spring semester, even if this necessitates attending through the summer of 2006. I admire the administration’s commitment to salvage the semester, and if circumstances were different, I would certainly join them in Houston. I hope the administration will give serious thought to a second option for those who are unable to relocate to Houston. Considering the amount of compassion they have shown towards their students by taking these giant measures to restart in Houston, I sincerely hope their compassion can be extended in some manner to those students with family or job commitments in the N.O. area that interfere with a temporary relocation to Houston.

From Dean Allison-Davis
I have just been able to get on this blog and have seen some of your questions. It’s a long list and will continue to read them and respond. I have seen several questions about financial aid that I cannot answer now. But I expect to be in Houston by Sunday and at the University of Houston by Monday afternoon (after I enroll my daughter in school). I understand Nadine Lewis, the law school’s financial aid officer is in Houston although I have not spoken with her yet. Between the 2 of us, we will be trying to set up a way to get your questions answered. It is my understanding that the computer records for Loyola were backed up outside of Louisiana, so I am hoping we will be able to retrieve all the student aid records at some point. Continue to watch this blog and other Loyola sites for contact information for us at UHouston Law.
The other question I have seen is about sitting this year out and returning as a 1L in the fall 2006 entering class. Even though I have not spoken to the Dean about this, my guess is that we will be able to accommodate this request (including scholarship awards). It will be important to let me (the admissions office) know if you want to do this so that we can include you in our numbers for next year as early as possible.
Again, watch for the contact information for us at U of Houston law. I know we hope to have that up and running very soon. And we are committed to doing all we can to make this transition as easy and smooth as possible.
I hope you all are safe. I hope we can answer all your questions and concerns shortly. If anyone wants to contact me directly, my email address is cld627@aol.com. I am currently in NC with my parents, but will be leaving tomorrow headed towards Houston. I probably will not arrive until Sunday. So I may not be able to check my email until Saturday. My cell number is 504-232-1806. Calls have been getting through much better lately. I can also receive text messages very easily. If I can be of any help, please let me know.

From Dean Bromberger
Dear Students:
This letter is to reassure all of you about our plans
for the fall and to further let you know that we
intend to be as flexible and understanding as
possible.
We have all suffered serious losses and an emotionally
draining dislocation. With that in mind, we have done
our best to put together the following program to
accommodate you all. I am determined to ensure that
all students graduate in time and complete a degree
course of the highest caliber.
For those students who wish to attend another law
school this fall, we have arrived at a policy agreed
to by Dean Ponoroff of Tulane Law, the leadership of
the American Association of Law Schools, and me.
Under this policy, any student enrolled at Loyola Law
School may be accepted as a “transient/visiting”
student for the fall semester. Acceptance to another
school for the fall is conditioned upon the student’s
financial good standing, that is, meeting all
financial obligations to Loyola Law for the fall
semester. All current student scholarships will
remain in effect.
For those wishing to continue at Loyola Law during the
fall semester, we will be providing the following
program based at the campus of the University of
Houston Law Center in Texas:
1. A full, comprehensive 1L semester program for
civil and common law students. These courses will be
taught by regular full-time faculty of Loyola Law
School.
2. Many upper-class courses – also taught by regular
full-time faculty of Loyola Law School – will include:
Evidence, Trusts and Estates, Constitutional Law,
Federal Income Tax, Successions, Family Law, Persons,
Environmental Law, Secured Transactions, Education
Law, Poverty Law, and other courses to be finalized in
the next few days. The faculty is also willing to
offer self-designed independent study options.
Current restrictions on the number of independent
study courses will be waived for students who take an
independent study option for this fall.
3. We anticipate that classes will be offered both
during the regular work week and on the weekends.
4. Although we are not in the position to provide
housing for students, we have been assured that the
University of Houston and its law students are willing
to help locate affordable accommodations, which may
include limited dormitory space or (on mutual
agreement) the sharing of accommodations with Houston
Law Center students.
5. We will be establishing an office for career
services at the University of Houston Law Center.
Please keep well and don’t panic. Compared to the
problems currently being endured by thousands still in
New Orleans, ours pale into insignificance.

Alternatives?
I am a 2L evening currently living in a hotel in Tennessee. All things considered, I am not sure that I am ready to focus on school right now. I feel that my family needs me in the area to assist in the cleanup and not in a city several hours away. What are my options? Are my Fall 2005 classes going to be offered in the Spring 2006? Please advise.

A tip for those relocating to Houston
I’m not sure if people relocating to Houston know about this website, but
try http://houston.craigslist.org/. There are some housing and employment
offers. It may or may not help, but it’s worth giving it a try.
I am also available to carpool from the Heights area (I live near the 610
and Shepherd exit) to school. Email me at eyescoba@central.uh.edu if you’re
interested.

IMPORTANT: sign-up for student email list
This is Brian Huddleston, Senior Reference Librarian at Loyola N.O. School of Law. I’m in contact with the Dean, faculty, and staff in Houston and am trying to get a roster of our displaced students. So please join this Google Group:
http://groups.google.com/group/Loyola-Law-Students/
so that we may have a means of e-mailing all of you. If you received an e-mail from me with an invitation to join, that’s because I have grabbed your non-Loyola e-mail address from this or some other forum. But I don’t have an e-mail address or contact information for many of you who have posted here. When you join, please provide your full name, current contact information, and what year, division, etc. you are. Hopefully we can start centralizing information so you (and we who are the staff and faculty at Loyola) don’t have to check multiple sources for information.
When you apply to join, please mention one faculty member you had this semester so I can verify you actually are a student as I’m posting this in semi-public forums. I don’t know why someone might pretend to be a student, but who knows. It may take a couple of hours for you to be approved. And I’ll be away from our host’s computer Wednesday (09/07) evening.

From LRN
Our thoughts are with you, your family, your colleagues, co-workers and students and friends, and the entire Gulf Coast. I wanted to share with you what Dov Seidman, our founder, wrote the LRN team:
“Once again, and tragically, forces of nature have created profound devastation and misery in our world – this time much closer to home. As many of you know, Hurricane Katrina’s 140 mile-an-hour winds pushed a 20-foot storm surge on the Louisiana coast line and then roared northward into neighboring Mississippi. Residents of the city of New Orleans, a major metropolitan area, and the surrounding coastal area now face significant problems having drinkable water, clean food, and shelter. The recovery effort from Hurricane Katrina will be unprecedented in U.S. history.
The core of the LRN mission centers around helping people. As such, I have committed LRN to a $5,000 donation to support the formidable relief efforts in the aftermath of Katrina. In addition to this threshold amount, LRN will match dollar-for-dollar all donations made by LRN colleagues to the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army, the charitable organizations currently most active in the relief efforts.
Today we have the opportunity to once again come to the assistance of our fellow citizens in their great time of need, as we did in our efforts to support victims of the Tsunami disaster. I encourage you to consider the people of the U.S. gulf coast as you consider your charitable contributions this year.
Sincerely,
Dov”
You will be in our thoughts, out prayers, and all our best hopes for the future.
With my deepest sympathy and condolences for your loss,

Houston Housing
Robin Young and I are working out of our Las Vegas “office,” and we are trying to connect available housing with students in need. I am already in contact with several Houston area realtors. Robin is searching Craigs List and is in contact with different landlords. Luckily, they are sympathetic to our plight and are working diligently to help us all relocate in time for classes. We have given them our various requirements (proximity to law school, short term leases, some furnished options, pets, etc). We are trying to compile a list of other specifics and rent ranges people have. If you are interested please e-mail myself at Jhernas@aol.com or Robin at rky11@hotmail.com.
If you are interested please address these questions:
Name:
Contact info:
Rent range:
Pets (do you have a pet? are you adverse to living with one?):
Smoker / Non-smoker (do you smoke? can you live with a smoker?):
Year in school:
When can you be in Houston?
Roommate preference? (do you already have someone to live with? do you care if you are grouped with 1L’s 2L’s or 3L’s? Is Co-ed ok?)
Can you share a bathroom?
Is off street parking ok?
Special Needs:
Hope this is helpful!!

Questions about Financial Aid
I have some concerns about financial aid. I am dependent
ENTIRELY upon financial aid for my tuition (via 2 loans–
federal & private). With the recent development of no more
free tuition, how is this going to work? A few days before
Katrina, I was on the telephone with financial aid because
something got screwed up with my financial aid (BOTH my
federal & private loans got “lost” & never got processed). I
assume my loans never got processed or went through properly
because of the evacuation. I gave the office the proper
paperwork to correct the problem, but I am sure it is still
sitting on someone’s desk at the moment. I need these loans
to cover the cost of the tuition (not to mention other
expenses). I feel so abandoned right now by my law school. I
lost my home & my job. I understand you need the money
eventually, by why NOW? I am supposed to start LSU tomorrow
but have no idea if my loans came through and who on earth
may or may not be working on my financial aid right now.
What are we supposed to do if our loans were not processed
yet? Someone please answer this. What is going on with the
financial aid office and will you be able to return to
Loyola’s campus to retrieve important paperwork regarding
the students’ financial aid?
Thank you

Offer from South Texas
I’m a 3L at South Texas, where we’re getting 21 (at last count) transfers. To those of you who will join us, welcome. We have a lot going on in the transition. If anyone has housing issues, I know there are several people here who are willing to help, and I will happily get you in touch with them. If South Texas transfers, or anyone new to Houston, have any questions, I’m happy to help any way I can. Please let me know what I can do.

Law School or Aid to the Devastated?
Again, Like everyone I have been watching the news. I keep thinking, Loyola, a social justice university needs to be a part of rebuilding New Orleans. What can we do to help these thousands of people who are worse off than us? As we all sit here and our major problem is “WHERE ARE WE GOING TO LAW SCHOOL?” There are thousands worrying about, “WHERE ARE WE GOING TO SLEEP?, WHAT ARE GOING TO EAT?, and HOW ARE WE GOING TO SURVIVE?”
More and more I am thinking about sitting out and somehow becoming part of this rebuilding effort and maybe the best way for us to help is by going to school and continuing our education but I am still at a loss. Loyola we need to make ourselves present in this effort, we need to step it up and support the community that has supported us for so long. This may slow our individual growth as lawyers but it will give us something that no classroom could teach us. I hear the call for us to get in the trenches and make a real difference. What’s one semester in the grand scheme of things. We could learn so much with the hands on help we can provide.
I do not know what to do and can offer little advice but I do know that it would be tough for me to sit in a classroom in Houston while I know thousands are suffering and I could somehow relieve that. If I am crazy, please let me know. But, during the search for the law school I thought fit me best and during orientation all I heard was Loyola Law and their commitment to the community, especially the disenfranchised! Well, I believe its time for Loyola to show that and I know my classmates would agree.

Furniture in Houston
Hi everyone, I’m a 1L from Loyola and I’m in Houston right now. I hope everyone is doing well. I know this is a very difficult time for all of us, but I think that as long as we band together and help each other in this time of need, I think things will work out for all of us.
If there are any students or faculty who need any help finding apartments or with getting the Houston program going please let me know. I’m sure that many of you will also need to get new furniture for the time you’re in Houston as well, I know of a place in Houston where you can get furniture for wholesale pricing. I will be glad to help anyone in any way that I can.

Important Question about Integrating Visits into Loyola Curriculum
I am a 1L who has just started at another law school. If catching up and dealing with everything that has happened in New Orleans wasn’t enough, I am severely concerned if I will loose a whole year of school because of my choice to “visit” at another school. My classes here are set up in a different way then they were at Loyola. At Loyola we took six courses which were divided into halves (first half was offered the fall semester, and second the spring). Here I am taking four complete courses. So… I have a whole course for contracts and torts this semester but do not have civil procedure or property at all (those are offered next semester). I am still enrolled in 16 credit hours, but not the same courses that I would be taking at Loyola. My concern is what will happen next semester? Will we be allowed to stay at the visiting school to fix this discrepancy and return after a year? Or will Loyola accomodate these discrepancies in the Spring semester offering Civil Procedure and Property from the beginnig and not as a second half continuation from the Fall semester? I have started at anther school and I do not know what to do! Whether I should continue here where I have family and support, or drop this school and go to Texas where I have absolutely nothing and no one? I do not want to lose a whole year of law school and a semester of tuition. I would really like Loyola administrators to address this issue so that I can have something to rely on and finally be able to move on with my life, whether here or in Texas. Please let me know something as soon as possible since I, like many others, have already started school elsewhere and are trying to catch up on missed work and are anxious to see what will happen.
I can be contacted at abojd01s@yahoo.com or 708-601-2717.
Thank You,
Anna Bojda
